BEST YOUNG TRANSLATOR AWARD

The best young translator award "Babylon" was established in 2013, at the initiative of the EU Delegation and the competition is organized in partnership by the EU Delegation and the Macedonian Translators and Interpreters Association (MATA).

It was awarded for the first time on the European Day of Languages, 26 September 2014, and since then, every year we have had a new winner of the competition.

The award focuses on young translators under the age of 26, citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia, who translate from the official languages of the European Union into the languages spoken in our country. The applicants send their translations of excerpts from prose literary works of their choice in the length of 3,000 to 5,000 words.

THE BEST YOUNG TRANSLATOR AWARD "BABYLON"

The "Babylon" award for the best young translator aims to motivate and support young translators (up to 26 years of age) and ensure highest quality translation of literary works from European languages into the languages spoken in our country.

It is conceived as a year-round activity in several stages that include informative meetings and practical workshops for literary translation with young translators, presentation of the award to language faculties across the country, organization of the evaluation process and ceremonial awarding of the award.

The cycle begins with the announcement of the competition in September and ends with the award ceremony in September of the following year.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

BRIDGING THE ACADEMIC AND THE PROFESSIONAL LIFE OF STUDENTS

This Program was launched in 2017 and so far 7 cycles have been implemented. 73 students in total have been mentored

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

The MATA Mentorship Program implemented in partnership by MATA and the Faculty of Philology "Blaze Koneski" - Skopje was designed in order to offer the students real life opportunities to practice translation and interpretation.

It is intended to serve as a bridge between the academic and professional lives of these students. Through the simulation of authentic professional engagement, the Program offers students the opportunity to come into contact with experienced colleagues, collaborate and learn from them and get a real picture of all aspects of the translator/interpreter profession.

It is intended for fourth-year students studying translation and interpretation.

The program is implemented by volunteer translators/interpreters from the MATA. One cycle lasts one semester, and during that period students get the opportunity to work actively for at least one month. At the end of the cycle, the students receive a certificate from MATA confirming their participation in the Program and it serves as a proof that they have fulfilled the requirement for an internship in the current academic year.

The implementation of the Program started in 2017, and so far 7 cycles have been implemented with a total of 73 students. In the fifth cycle, for the first time, the opportunity for subtitling was introduced in cooperation with Atila Pirot, who secured the copyrights for the film "Requiem for the American Dream" which was translated into Macedonian by the students.
